The Jewish Central Information Office was founded by Alfred Wiener, a German Jew who worked for the Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith ( Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens ). In 1933 he fled to Amsterdam where he founded the agency along with David Cohen. The JCIO produced reports to spread word of the activities that were occurring in Nazi Germany. The goal of the Institute was both to provide Jewish learning speakers that the communities could not afford on their own and to bring people together for socializing; because most of these communities had B'nai B'rith lodges, the founders worked through the lodges on the project, and it was known at first as the B'nai B'rith Institute of Judaism; annual meeting; name changed in 2001 to Wisconsin Institute of Judaism.
